Mountain Pilgrims is an emerging community of people that seeks to re-imagine the mountain experience. Mountain Pilgrims meet outdoors to discover the ‘thin places’ where the spirit soars and we are lifted out of the everyday. Through three strands: Active, Reflective and Abbey, we invite those with different experience and fitness to join us as we journey together. In recent months new strands of Mountain Pilgrims have developed: Mini Pilgrims and 4th Sunday Adventures; both aimed at mini-explorers and young at heart adventurers!
This page draws together ideas and activities run by Mountain Pilgrims in the hope that local churches and Christians interested in the hills might start their own outdoor-based Fresh Expression of Church. Fresh Expressions of Church are about serving those outside of the church, listening to people and helping church grow in a relevant way. Some churches may already connect with walking groups, or may be situated in an ideal Lakes location that would allow them to connect with new people who are interested in the fells and mountains. We hope this space will help you think more intentionally about how church might emerge around these connections.
On the right hand side you will see downloadable resources based on spaces created by Mountain Pilgrims. These will include:
- Reflective Walks – aimed at adults and mature young people involving a theme-based reflection as part of a moderate walk.
- Active walks – more challenging walks for adults, currently specific to locations in the Lake District, and
- Mini Pilgrims – a theme based activity to do on an easy walk for children and adults.
Feel free to use these ideas as they stand or adapt them to fit your own requirements.
Running Mountain Pilgrims as a community group, rather than a formally constituted group, allows you not to be bound by lots of rules and regulations. However, it is important that you set some guidelines for the group to ensure safety, for example by writing a disclaimer and risk assessing all activities.
Participants should be made aware that they are responsible for themselves and their dependents on any walks, and should ensure that they and their dependents are properly equipped for the weather conditions and are wearing appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear.
A leader or participating team member on Mini Pilgrim walks should hold an up to date DBS certificate to ensure safeguarding.
